There’s nothing quite as exciting as shooting out the end of a huge barrel, though it can feel pretty lame when nobody was there to see you do it.
Instead of talking to your friends about your “insane session yesterday”, why not just show them some sweet surfing footage?
This is where the GoPro camera comes in. A GoPro camera can easily be strapped to your board or body so that you can capture high-quality video out in the water. There are many different GoPro cameras and GoPro camera accessories on the market today, which can make getting the right camera or mount a bit of a challenge.
That is exactly why we wanted to put this little GoPro guide together to make sure you get some seriously professional shots when ripping at your local spot. Let’s take our GoPro camerass surfing!
How To Get Started with Your GoPro Surf Setup
While it might be tempting to hit the water with your GoPro as soon as it comes in the mail, there are a few things that you’ll need to do to get it set up properly before using it.
Keep Your GoPro Dry
There’s nothing worse than getting out of the water to check your camera footage and all you can see is a big water droplet on your GoPro screen. Both water drops and condensation can appear on the GoPro lens, both on the inner and outer portions, ruining any good footage you may have had.
Yes, you could theoretically wipe the GoPro lens with some spit every five minutes, but doing that while surfing sin;t the best idea. Instead, get yourself a water repellent product like Rain-X and use it to treat your GoPro camera before hitting the water.
Using the Best Setting
While we won’t get too in-depth with the GoPro camera settings right now, it is worth noting a few different settings that will assure you higher-quality surf footage:
Mount Your GoPro
One of the easiest angles in our humble opinion is the nose angle. By attaching your mount to the nose of your board, you can set it and forget it. Plus, it won’t get in the way of your surfing. You can easily adjust the angle of the mount between waves as well, getting shots of you or the beach.
Of course, there are other types of mounts as well, including hand mounts and mouth mounts. These are great for those who are looking for a more dynamic, cinematic surfing experience.
We’ll go over some of our favorite GoPro camera mount products below!
GoPro HERO 8 Review
The GoPro Hero 8 might just be one of the best cameras that the company has manufactured to date.
One thing you can't deny is the insanely high video quality and top-notch stabilization software that makes your footage look as if it was captured using a gimbal.
The camera shape is even more portable than it used to be, which is pretty impressive, and the lens is two times as impact-resistant, making it one of the best for use in action sports like surfing!
One of our favorite features is the GoPro TimeWarp 2.0, which captures incredibly stabilized time-lapse videos as you move through the water.
You can even slow the time warp down to soak in your best wave moments.
Beyond that, the GoPro Hero 8 makes use of LiveBurst, allowing you to pick from surfing shots 1.5 seconds before and after you record to get the best possible footage.
It comes with a built-in mount, which is a really nice touch in our opinion, though they did get rid of the HDMI port on this model, which is the only small disadvantage. Overall, the GoPro Hero 8 camera is one of the top cameras for those who want to share their surf sessions with the world.
Mouth Mount for GoPro Review
If you watch Kelly Slater or Anthony Walsh closely, you may have seen them using this little device.
This GoPro camera Mouth Mounts use a breathable, scuba-style mouthpiece that allows you to bite down to keep a solid grip and capture some pretty incredible surfing footage.
Plus, you’re footage retains better stability compared to using a hand grip.
The air channel makes it easy to breathe while the neck lanyard helps to make sure that you don’t lose your GoPro while surfing heavy waves.
Many people stress about whether a mouth mount will be comfortable or not when in use.
With the dropdown design, you can use your camera mount for hours on end without feeling any strain. It is compatible with any GoPro camera model and has a Floaty Back piece that you can buy separately for added safety.
Trigger Waterproof Pistol Review
If you would rather shoot with your hand than your mouth, we highly recommend checking out the Trigger Waterproof Pistol.
This handheld mount is compatible with all GoPro camera models and comes complete with a small trigger to help you capture videos and pictures with ease.
The grip comes wrapped in a comfortable, non-slip material, which allows you to hold it with ease for hours on end.
The very bottom of the grip has a small cap too. Open it up and you’ll find a hollow space inside the grip, which is perfect for storing small valuables, such as your car key or some cash.
Because the tripod, mount, and grip are attached with large, adjustable screws, finding the best camera angle when out on the water is super easy.
If you’re daring enough to go surfing at night, you’ll be happy to know that the mount is compatible with Suptig diving lights, meaning you can capture footage of the inside of the waves no matter how dark it is around you!
Waterproof Floating Hand Grip with Surfing Mount Review
If you’re in the market for something a bit more affordable, we highly recommend checking out the Waterproof Floating Hand Grip from WLPREOE.
It is made with a high-quality, non-slip foam handle that provides users with a tight yet comfortable grip.

Plus, this hollow portion provides added buoyancy if dropped.
If you want to attach it to your surfboard instead, you can use the included elastic adhesive.
